Admission of the Physically Challenged Child
It is this center’s policy to not discriminate against persons with disabilities based on disability, and to provide children and parents with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in the center’s programs and services, in compliance with state law and the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. We will review the special needs of each child with the child’s health care provider. The physically challenged child shall be admitted only if the health care provider considers it advisable. Admission will take into consideration the availability of qualified staff and reasonable accommodations.
Age and maturational Requirements for Admission
For admission, the child must have his/her third or fourth birthday by December 31ST of the year the child is entering school. Children must be toilet-trained, able to go to the restroom alone and able to clean and dress him or herself.
Enrollment Capacity
The maximum number of children that can be enrolled at Kahului Baptist Preschool is eighty (80).
Actual enrollment is dependent upon staff availability in compliance with the Department of Human Services (DHS) requirements regarding group childcare. The adult-student ratio shall be one adult per eight children for three-year olds and one adult per eight children for four-year olds.
Enrollment Procedures
Upon receipt of a completed application form, registration fee and if there is space available, the child is accepted into the school. A “Parent Enrollment Agreement” will then be given to the parents to complete. If there is no space available, the child is placed on a waiting list.
A copy of the Parents’ Handbook will be given to each family upon the enrollment of the child..
In summary, a child is considered officially enrolled in Kahului Baptist Preschool when the following procedures have been completed:
-
At least one parent or guardian has attended the mandatory orientation meeting before the beginning of the new school year.
-
The child and a parent have visited the classroom for a one hour scheduled visit.
-
All the necessary forms have been completed and returned with payment prior to the first day of school.
-
The parents (or guardians) submit payment of tuition and/or fees by the due dates.
-
The parents (or guardians) are loyal to, supportive of, and participate in the preschool and abide by its policies.
Medical Requirement for Admission
The Hawaii School Attendance Law requires a completed Pupil’s Health Record (Form 14) to prove that a physical examination and tuberculin test or X-ray were completed within one year before school entrance and that all immunization requirements have been met. All these requirements must be met before a new entrant will be permitted to attend school. The supplemental Form that is attached to the Form 14 immunization form is to be filled out by your doctor.
If your physician has ordered a special medical management procedure for a child in care, an adult trained in the procedure must be on-site whenever the child is present.
Withdrawal or Dismissal of a Child
The preschool staff will work together with the parents to resolve any problems that may arise before dismissal is considered. The school reserves the right of dismissing a child for the following reasons:
-
If after entering, the child seems unable to adjust to the school.
-
If the child is repeatedly disruptive or destructive, or behaves in such a way as to endanger the health and safety of the other children and/or the staff.
-
For parental neglect, non-support, non-compliance of any school policies.
-
Any outburst of anger, words, or actions from adults to any staff member will not be tolerated and will result in dismissal.
-
Non-payment of tuition.
-
Absence from school for a period of ten consecutive days or more with no notification from parents.
In the event of a dismissal, all efforts will be made to help in accessing services and/or an alternative placement.

Other Admission Policies
Child Custody
Any parent or legal guardian restricting a parent or spouse from having custody of the child must submit a certified court copy of the court order.
Disabilities Nondiscrimination policy
It is this center’s policy to not discriminate against persons with disabilities on the basis of disability, and to provide children and parents with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in the center’s programs and services, in compliance with state law and the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Disclosure of Information
Names of all children will be posted around the school, school pictures, lists and occasional newsletters.
For health and/or safety concerns, Kahului Baptist Preschool reserves the right to inform the proper state agencies (for example, the Department of Health, Department of Human Services, Child Protective Services, or the Maui Police Department) of the health, physical or emotional status of any enrolled child without the parents’ written consent.
All other information pertaining to a child or parents of a child shall not be disclosed to persons other than the facility staff unless the parents of the child grant written permission for the disclosure or an emergency arises.
Emergency Closing
In the event of an emergency in which the health and safety of the children are involved, the school reserves the right to close the facility immediately. Parents will be informed by Brightwheel, phone call or a sign will be posted on the premises. If public schools are closed due to an impending natural disaster or emergency, preschool parents should also consider the preschool closed. See the section entitled “Plan of Action” in this handbook for more information.
Idling Vehicles
Vehicles may not be left running while unattended. The operator of the vehicle should turn off the unit and remove the keys from ignition when not in use.
Insurance
The preschool is covered for liability insurance with State Farm Insurance Company.
No Smoking Rule
Smoking is not permitted on the church or school premises and/or grounds at any time.
Racial Nondiscrimination Policy
Kahului Baptist Preschool admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies or school-administered programs.

Setting up a Brightwheel Account
Brightwheel will be used as a communication tool. You will use it to check in/out, communicate with the teacher/office, a place to receive pictures and videos of your child, and you will do all payments through there. Although a lot of these things are done with your phone, we ask you to remain off your phone as you are dropping off and picking up. Your child needs to know they are important and worth this time of undivided attention.
-
Load the app on your smartphone/tablet/computer.
-
You will receive an e-mail from Kahului Baptist Preschool that will say, “Action required: Kahului Baptist Preschool has invited you to their BrightWheel community.”
-
It will give these directions
-
Download the free iPhone, iPad or Android apps, or sign up from the web.
-
Choose Create Account, Parent, and then “Join Your School.”
-
If you do not see your child upon creation, click “Add a child” and enter this 10-character invite code (each parent has their own invite code.)
-
You will only be able to have access to your child’s information, you will not be able to see anyone else.
-
Once the account is made, you will need to add your family and an approved pick up list. Choose edit on the top right corner, scroll to the bottom until you see “Add Family and Approved Pickup”. **Only parents will be able to see pictures and communication from the teacher. Authorized pickups will be sent a four digit sign in/out code only.
-
You will be assigned a four-digit number. This is the number you will use to check in/out. Each person on your pick-up list will have their own number. You may also check in/out with the QR code on Brightwheel.

Once you have signed up, send a message through Brightwheel so we can confirm you have it.

Registration Fee
A registration fee of $200.00 is to be paid to confirm enrollment of the child in our school. The registration fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. It covers the cost of the child’s preschool T-shirt, special events in the school, and classroom equipment.
Excursion Fee
In addition to the registration fee, a $125.00 excursion fee will be needed by the first day of school. We like to go on one “bus” excursion per month. Examples of a bus excursion are trips to the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu, the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea, a reef walk in Kihei, Hui No’eau Visual Art Center, Kula Farms and more. The excursion fee covers the cost of transportation and entrance fees for the entire year.
Monthly Tuition
Parents are responsible for the payment of the tuition for the entire program. Tuition must be paid to hold the place of a registered child, regardless of whether the child is absent for any length of time or the number of school days in a particular month. This is because the entire program tuition is computed and then divided into 12 equal monthly payments, regardless of the number of days the school is open during a month.
Tuition is due and payable in advance and without prior notice on the first day of each month. Tuition Payments will be accepted through Brightwheel only. You will receive more information on how to set this up.
In the event that a child is admitted at any time after the first of the month, the tuition for that month shall be prorated depending on the number of school days remaining in the month.

Other Fees
Denied Payment Fee
If a tuition payment is denied due to insufficient funds, a fee of $20.00 will be assessed. If we receive two denied payments, your account will be turned over to our Preschool Committee for review.
Late Payment Fee
Any tuition payments made after the 10th day of the month will be assessed a late fee of $20.00. Non-payment by the end of the month that the tuition is due may result in the dismissal of the child from the preschool.
Non Payment of Tuition
If your tuition payment has not been made in full by the end of the month, you will have 30 days to pay in full or will be asked to remove your child.
Overtime Fee
If a notification call to let us know you will be late picking up your child has not been made before 4:30 P.M., a fee of $5.00 will be charged. In addition, if a child is not picked up by 4:45P.M., an overtime fee of $2.00 per minute will be assessed.
If a child is not picked up by 6:00 P.M. and the school has been unable to contact the child’s parent/guardian or the persons authorized to pick up the child, Child Protective Services may be called.
A parent who is consistently late (past 4:45 P.M.) may be asked to remove his or her child from the preschool.
Scholarships
We regret that we are not always able to provide scholarships. We do, however, accept children who are helped by other organizations (for example, Preschool Open Doors, Good Beginnings, Pauahi Keiki, Quality Care for Hawaii’s Keiki, Arbor, etc.)
Medical Information

Communicable Diseases
Parents must keep their child at home if their child has any symptoms of a contagious disease. Parents must report the case to the school immediately once a physician confirms it. An overall school health alert will be posted. For confidential reasons, no individual will be identified. A doctor’s clearance will be needed before your child can come back to school. Please refer to the Department of Health Reference Guide on page 19 for a list of common ailments.
If a child is kept home, or sent home from school with a temperature of 101 degrees or higher, they may not be permitted to return to school for at least 24 hours or until the fever has passed.
Emergency Form
The second page of the preschool application serves as an emergency information form. State law requires that this form be completed and updated by parents or legal guardians. Parents must immediately inform the office in writing of any changes or additions to this form. This page of the application contains information about your child’s medical history, allergies, medical plan and number, and who to contact in case of an emergency if we are unable to locate the child’s parents.
Emergency Procedures
If a child becomes ill or is seriously injured, the child’s parents will be contacted immediately. Parents are required by law to be readily available for the school to contact them in the event of an emergency at school.
If the school is unable to contact a child’s parent(s), the designee(s) on the child’s application will be called to act on the parent’s behalf. If the school is unable to contact the parent(s) or designee(s), we will contact the child’s medical provider as stated on the record of the child.
When a child is in need or seems to be in need of immediate hospital care, we will call 911, notify one of the parents or designees on the application and have the child taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
An adult shall accompany the child to the emergency area and shall stay with the child until a parent or designee assumes responsibility for the child.
Hygiene Rules
Parents are responsible for assisting their child to maintain good health habits such as:
-
Keeping clean.
-
Keep fingernails short.
-
Wear appropriate clothing.
-
Wash hands carefully.
-
Use a handkerchief or facial tissue correctly.
Injury Reports
For minor injuries, band-aids will be used for cuts or scrapes and ice for bumps or bruises. State Law prohibits the application and usage of un-prescribed medicines, including alcohol and antibiotic ointments. A “Student Injury Report” will be sent through Brightwheel.
Medical Expenses
Parents (or guardians) are responsible for all of the medical expenses incurred by their child at or away from the school, including emergency trips to a hospital or clinic.
Medication
Any medication to be given to a child in school will need to be in the original container with clear instructions, the doctor’s name and a recent date on the label. A form entitled, “Medication Release Form,” authorizing the teacher to give your child the medication must be filled out the first day medication is administered, stating the length of time it needs to be given. A new form needs to be completed each week. The school and staff are not responsible for any side effects or failure to administer the medicine. A doctor must prescribe medication. We do not administer “over the counter” medications.
Preventative Health Measures
Parents must keep their child at home if he or she has any of the following symptoms: colds, earache, red eyes, chills, sneezing, sore throat, fever, vomiting, listlessness, diarrhea, impetigo, ukus (head lice), or any symptoms of any communicable disease. If a child in school has any of these symptoms, the parents will be called to take their child home.
Uku checks are done every Monday morning or on the first day returning to school if there is a long weekend. Parents are asked to wait as their child is being checked. If ukus or nits are found, the child will be sent home and can return only after treatment and when there are no live ukus or eggs left in the hair. The child’s hair will be checked before readmitting.
Fingernails and front hair should be kept short. The girls’ long front hair should be pinned up.
Sunscreen
To ensure the health and safety of all children, we ask that parents apply sunscreen to their children before school each day. Staff will not apply sunscreen during the day.
washing hands
Washing hands is a huge part of keeping germs away. Washing hands in a public place looks a little different than it will be at home. When we teach them to wash their hands they are to:
-
Wet their hands under running water
-
Put soap on hands and “make bubbles.”
-
Rinse
-
Before turning off the water, they have to get a paper towel first, dry their hands, then use the towel to cover the faucet handle and turn off the water using the paper towel.
This is a life skill in a public place. We don’t ever want them to waste water and they do not need to do this at home, however, we want them to be healthy and safe when not at home. When you see your child washing their hands this way at school, please do not tell them to turn off the water first. They are learning to keep germs away when out in public where they may pick up from other people.

In the Classroom
SIGNING YOUR CHILD IN/OUT OF SCHOOL
A reliable authorized person (age sixteen or over) must sign your child in/or out of the preschool premises. “Sign-In”/“Sign-Out” is done through the Brightwheel Program on an IPAD located on the lanai. Take your child to wash their hands, put belongings away and escort your child to a designated on-duty teacher when dropping your child off at school. Notify an on-duty teacher when picking up your child from school. When entering and leaving the classrooms, please use the front doors only.
Only those people essential to preschool business will be permitted on property. If you, or one of your authorized people are on campus other than for drop off and pick up, you must sign in at the office first.
No child will be released to an individual picking up the child without a valid pick-up card. If someone other than the regular person is picking up your child, please notify the staff through Brightwheel, even if the person is on the authorized list. If someone not on the list comes to pick up your child and the school has not been notified in writing, the child will not be released. In an emergency you may fax, e-mail, bring a note to the preschool, or message Brightwheel for that day only, giving permission for someone without a pickup card to take your child from the preschool.

ADJUSTING TO PRESCHOOL
With most children, adjusting to any new experience is a slow and gradual process. In school everything is unfamiliar and new, in which, the hardest part is being away from you. In the beginning your child may not be sure that you are going to come back, or may not fully understand why you are leaving him or her in this strange place. If this becomes difficult, try to reassure your child that you love him or her and have confidence that the day will be great.
Whether in day care, preschool or kindergarten, this is the child’s first of many big steps to be taken over the years. It is important that you take an active interest in your child’s education throughout the path to adulthood. This first step can be an exciting and satisfying time for all of you!
CHILD ORIENTATION
This will help parents as well as children adjust to the school easier
-
Home Visit - Your child’s teacher will visit your child at his/her home before school starts (optional)
-
Class visits – you and your child will visit the classroom for an hour with a few other children in his/her class. This will help them get familiar with the room as well as play with some of the children they will be in class with
-
1/2 Class – ½ of the children will come one day (full day). The next day the other half of the children will attend for a full day
-
All children – the first day of school will be with all children
Ways to Make the Adjustment Easier
-
Be sure your child has a good night’s sleep and a nourishing breakfast.
-
Try to spend some time alone with your child every day. Talk to him or her and also listen. Every child needs the exclusive time of a parent.
-
Do not be surprised if he or she worries or cries.
-
Be truthful. Tell your child you will be back (after lunch, after nap, or after school).
-
Have confidence that he or she will adjust at his or her own pace. Your child may rather “wait and see” before joining in new and different activities.
-
Do not keep your child at home because he or she “does not want to go to school.” Not only is this setting a precedent that your child might wish to pursue, but is allowing him or her to make a decision that should be up to an adult.
-
Make your farewell brief. The longer you linger and let your child feel you are worried, the more you impart your lack of confidence in him or her to handle the situation. Children live up (or down) to our expectations. You also put the teacher in an awkward position of having to intervene in something that is between the two of you.
-
Bribes to encourage school attendance should not be offered.
-
You, too, may have an adjustment to make. This will be easier if you try not to have a preconceived idea of how your child is going to react.
In The Classroom
Absence Procedures
Please send a Brightwheel message on the first day of each absence to inform us of the reason for the absence.
If your child will be away (family vacation or other reasons) please notify the teacher through Brightwheel or by calling the office.
Chapel
Chapel, our worship time, is held daily throughout the school year. The children will learn about God through praise songs and prayer for family and friends. Children also learn Bible stories and through our “Mission Friends” program, children learn about our missionaries and the work they do for God.
Clothing
Children should be dressed in comfortable clothes and footwear that the child can put on and take off unaided. One-piece outfits (body suits or overalls), halter-tops and inappropriate clothing are highly discouraged. No buttons or strings on pants if the child cannot manipulate buttons or tie strings. Elasticized trousers, rather than zippers, are easier for children to manage by themselves. When your child wears sweaters, jackets, slippers and shoes, please be sure your child’s name is on them. Use of slippers is encouraged, if shoes are used; please use simple Velcro shoes that the children can put on and take off by themselves. No cowboy boots or “high heel” plastic shoes.
Each child is to bring two extra sets of clothes in case the child soils his or her clothes. If your child wet themselves. they will be given a clean pair of clothes to change into and wet clothes will be sent home. If your child soils their clothes with a bowel movement, the soiled clothes will be in a sealed plastic bag and sent home. Staff are not able to touch feces or wipe their bottoms. Children will be encouraged to
clean themselves up with aid from the teacher and given clean clothes to change (please see Potty Policy for potty accidents). Parents should replenish the used items with a clean set by the following day.
All clothing and footwear MUST be marked with the child’s name.
For all excursions, covered shoes and the school T-shirt are required.
Children should also bring a sleeping mat or blanket that can fit into their cubby. One flat 10” x 14” pillow is permitted. Sleeping mats are sent home on Fridays for washing and are to be brought back on Monday morning. The child’s name should be on each article. Each child is assigned a cubby in the classroom where belongings will be kept.
DIAL – R4 Screening
At the end of September (approx.) each child will be administered the DIAL-R4 Screening (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning – fourth edition) by a staff member to determine their developmental level and where they can be of most help to your child. All staff have been trained to administer these assessments. These results will be shared with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences and used in our planning for overall program improvements. This screening is done on an individual basis to determine possible learning, hearing, vision, or coordination problems. If such problems are identified, a conference with the child’s parents to plan ways to help with further diagnosis will be arranged. We will discuss ways as to the correction of the problem, either within the classroom, or by referral to a private doctor, speech or hearing specialist, or other professional. We will be happy to discuss the DIAL-R4 procedures individually at any time. Written reports about your child’s development will be provided at least twice during the school year.
Discipline
The following basic rules are set in order to aid the child in the development of self-respect, respect for others and for the environment:
-
A child may not hurt him or herself or any other person(s) in any way.
-
A child may not disturb another child’s work, lunch or rest.
-
A child must use the school’s toys and other equipment or furniture in an appropriate manner.
-
Additional individual classroom rules, based on the above rules, will be given to the children.
Disregarding the rules may result in the child having a privilege taken away (for example, not playing in their favorite center and having to make a choice to play elsewhere or not attending an excursion). Serious or repeated offenses will be discussed with the parents. Any other disciplinary action is the parents’ responsibility.
Excursions
Excursions are planned and announced in advance. A bus will be chartered when necessary for the excursions. Help with the care of the children is appreciated.
Children must wear the school T-shirt and covered shoes. This is extremely important because we are concerned about your child’s safety. Slippers and sandals tend to catch on the steps of the bus. The school shirt lets us easily identify and keep track of children when they are away from school.
Parents are asked to sign a Parents’ Agreement Form that includes permission for the child to go on excursions.
Children must leave and return on the bus. If you have accompanied the children and need to take them from the excursion site, you must have permission from the Director first and the child must be signed out with the teacher.
Fund Raising
We do not do fundraising for our preschool. The school may participate in worthy causes such as the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) Hop-A-Thon or the St. Jude’s Trike-A-Thon during the year. However, you are not obligated to collect pledges if you do not wish to do so.
Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found area is in the walkthrough on the way to the playground. Any articles not claimed after one month will be removed from the box.
Messages
Please send written notes, use Brightwheel, or call the office to leave a message. Check your child’s files in the classroom daily for messages from the school or teacher. Parents are encouraged to communicate any concerns or questions as soon as possible to the child’s teacher or the preschool director.
Nap Time
After lunch the children are encouraged to nap. Children who cannot sleep must lie down quietly and not disturb the other children. During the last half-hour of naptime, they may read quietly.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences with the child’s teacher will be offered in October. Other conferences may be held at the request of the parents, teachers or preschool director as needed.

Personal Belongings
Children are not to bring any other items to school except for the following allowable exceptions:
-
Books and audiocassettes may be brought any day to share with the other children.
-
Other items may be brought when instructed for show and tell.
Sharp toys, guns, knives, balloons and other toys determined to possibly be dangerous are not allowed in school. Money and jewelry should not be brought to school. In addition, children should not bring any large items that will not fit in their cubbies.
All items should be labeled with your child’s name. The preschool is not responsible for lost items.
Programs for Parents
We offer several programs during the year, we encourage your participation. There will be a Parent Orientation before the beginning of the school year, an Open House/Fun Day, Thanksgiving Luncheon, a Christmas program, Preschool Sunday, Easter float parade and art gallery, May Day and a graduation program for those going on to kindergarten at the end of the school year.
Snacks
Nutritious morning and afternoon snacks are provided for all the children. A qualified nutritionist, as required by the State of Hawaii, monitors the snack menu. The menu is posted in each classroom.
Special Occasions
To avoid an over-abundance of snacks on a particular day, parents who wish to send a special snack to recognize their child’s birthday or some other occasion must inform the classroom teacher at least three days in advance. (Please refer to the “Goodie Guidelines” below). Parents may provide nutritional snacks such as muffins, rolls, plain donuts, cheese, fresh or dried fruit, soybeans or fresh vegetables with dip. Party favors, presents and goodie bags are strongly discouraged.
You may also recognize a child’s birthday or special occasion by donating a book to his or her class library in the child’s name.
Table Manners
All children will be encouraged to use proper manners. No child will be forced to eat. No food or drinks will be restricted from a child as a form of punishment.
Lunch Guidelines
Lunch
We are a peanut free school, please do not send items with peanuts or peanut butter. (Almond butter and cashew butter are good alternatives) Parents must provide a nutritious home lunch for their child. All food should be in bite-sized pieces or prepared in such a way that the child can feed him or herself with minimal assistance. All containers and utensils must be clearly labeled in indelible ink with the child’s name. The child should be able to open and close the lunch box independently. Also, the lunch box should be within a size that is manageable.

Parents are responsible for providing the food, drink, containers and utensils for their child’s lunch. They are also responsible for cleaning these items as well as cleaning the lunch box. Uneaten food will be disposed of to prevent the child from eating spoiled food. If you would like to know how your child’s eating habits are at school, please ask your child’s teachers. Items that are unopened and will not easily spoil may be kept. Lunches will not be warmed up.

Lunch Suggestions for Preschoolers
-
Sandwiches – Almond butter and jelly, almond butter and honey, toasted or grilled cheese, tuna*, egg salad*, cold cuts*. If your child does not eat the crust of the bread, please remove it. Try cutting sandwiches into fun shapes, for instance, triangles, circles or use cookie cutters.
-
Vegetables- Carrot sticks, curls or coins, celery sticks (can be stuffed with cream cheese or cottage cheese), cherry tomatoes, cauliflower and/or broccoli florets, cucumber slices, pickles, green pepper strips, Chinese peas, green or black olives.
-
Fruit - Apples (please peel and cut), oranges (peel and section), strawberries, seedless grapes (cut in half), cherries (remove pits), watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, nectarines, peaches (if canned, light syrup is best), pears, applesauce, bananas, kiwi fruit, cut papaya, star fruit, pineapple, guavas, plums, dried fruit and berries.
-
Drinks - Water or juice with low sugar content. NO soda or carbonated drinks.
-
Treats - When choosing treats, the best choice is fresh fruit. Carrot cake, mango bread, banana bread, graham crackers, muffins, cookies (oatmeal, fig or apple newtons) are also nutritious low-fat, low sugar treats.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND: Twinkies, candy, cup cakes, donuts, iced cookies, fruit rolls, chocolate, marshmallows, chewing gum, Hostess cakes and fruit pies, and gummy bears, dinosaurs or worms. These items are “empty calories” and tend to stick to teeth and cause decay.

CURRICULUM AND VALUE OF PRESCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The basic objective of preschool education relative to spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social development is to teach children the “how” of doing things, which also includes concepts.

Units of study are chosen in areas of interests and needs that are most universal with young children. These areas include self, the family and home, friends, health, community life, the natural world and God.

Materials and activities are designed to help children in their ability to solve problems, to improve their language skills, to develop math and science concepts, and to develop sensory and perceptual keenness that is invaluable for later learning.

Some of the classroom activities and their values are:

Plan of Action
EMERGENCY PLANS
It is very important that parents are aware of the major disasters we may have to face and the procedures we will follow should one of them affect us. The preschool has made the following preparations for the safety and welfare of the children. If you would like more information, please speak with the Director of the preschool or call the Maui Civil Defense Agency
(808-270-7285).

In the event of an emergency, the Director will coordinate all emergency actions that need to be taken. In her absence, the acting director will be in charge.

Fire and Fire Drills
Fire drills are held monthly as required by the Department of Human Services. The signal for a drill or an actual fire is a loud alarm. We will leave in an orderly fashion, according to the evacuation plan posted in each classroom and, under staff supervision, proceed to the end of the playground on the right side of the facility. After a short stay, we will return to the school.

In the event of an actual fire, our evacuation procedures and destination will be the same as for a fire drill.
=
Should our facility be damaged by fire to the extent that we are unable to occupy it, we will be temporarily housed in the Kahului Baptist Church fellowship hall or sanctuary and parents will be called to pick up their children.
Tsunami
A tsunami is a series of waves generally caused by earthquakes on or near the ocean floor, anywhere in the Pacific Basin. Alerting for a tsunami is accomplished by the issuance of TSUNAMI WATCHES and WARNINGS.

A TSUNAMI WATCH means an earthquake has occurred somewhere in the Pacific Ocean that could produce a tsunami, but the presence of waves has not yet been confirmed. A TSUNAMI WATCH means to prepare.

A TSUNAMI WARNING means that waves have been confirmed and all coastal areas of Maui must be evacuated.

Our facility is just on the edge of a tsunami evacuation zone. In the event the siren sounds, we will walk the children up one block to Makalii Park which is up a few blocks from the school and remain in place there. Please do not leave work or rush to the school if a watch or warning is announced. We will take care of the children until pickup can be safely accomplished. If you are in or can get to a safe area close to where you work, do so. It is recommended that you remain in the safe area until the “All Clear” is announced.

Delaying such unnecessary travel will assist in preventing traffic gridlock on our streets and allow emergency vehicles and those who must evacuate to move freely.

Hurricane
Hurricanes and tropical storms are intense weather systems, usually generated over warm Pacific Ocean waters from June through November that can produce damaging surf, destructive winds, and heavy flooding. Alerting for these storms is accomplished by the issuance of HURRICANE or TROPICAL STORM WATCHES and WARNINGS.

The National Weather Service issues hurricane or Tropical Storm WATCHES about 36 hours prior to the arrival of hazardous storm effects on Oahu.

Hurricane or Tropical Storm WARNINGS are issued when the storm effects could affect Oahu in 24 hours or less.

When a WATCH is issued, we will monitor the storm and make decisions to close before the issuance of a WARNING.
Earthquake
If evacuation is necessary, we will proceed to the nearest civil defense shelter or leave a note stating where we have gone.
Nuclear threat or active shooter
For these situations, the children are taught about turtles who hide in their shells when danger is around them. They stay in their shell until the danger is gone, then come out. Our lockdown will be the “turtle shell.” If such an emergency occurs, they will automatically know where to go and what to do. Monthly drills are held for these.
General Suggestions
A good rule of thumb for determining if the school is open or closed is as follows: if it is announced over the radio or television that the public schools are closing for some disaster-related event that has or will affect Maui, we will also, likely, close. Under no circumstances, however, will we close until all parents or guardians have picked up all the children.

DO NOT call the school during emergencies. Keep the telephone lines open and available for those who have urgent needs. Staff
It is essential that you establish individual and family plans for tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. These plans should identify what preparatory actions should be taken for each hazard. They should include where shelters are located and how you will travel to them if evacuation advisories are issued, what you plan to do if the family is separated and what type of survival supplies you will need. Such information can be obtained from the Maui Civil Defense Agency (808-270-7285).
In summary, we will do everything possible to ensure the safety of the children in the event one of these hazards was to threaten or affect us.
FIREARMS and OTHER HAZARDS to CHILDREN
Firearms or any other weapon that may pose a threat to students and staff are prohibited.
